[Help-smalltalk] Errors during compile for GST 1.2.9 on Gentoo (not with Portage)

Greetings,
  I am encountering the following error during my compile of GNU
Smalltalk 1.2.9 on Gentoo Linux.  I have JIT and preemption enabled
with their respective configure arguments.  The problem does not
appear to occur when they are not set.
