Well, 2.3.1 compiles OK on  MacOS 10.3.9, all 105 tests are OK, and it 
seems to work with the programs  I've tested so far.

It also compiles on SuSE Linux 9.3 x86_64, all 105 tests pass, and runs OK 
so far
