[Help-smalltalk] GNU Smalltalk 3.1 status report

There are no known major bugs in GNU Smalltalk's master branch.

The only pending problem is the Windows port, which has the following bugs:

1) Canol's reported failure (a problem with Windows-style paths)

2) sockets do not work (I just know that)

I have a pending patch for 2. I tested them under Wine and they seemed
to work, but apparently it's not so easy and under Windows (I got a
machine yesterday for ten minutes) it's a total disaster.

However, it is worth doing it. Since GNU Smalltalk is pretty mature now
(I don't expect much more stuff in the VM that needs porting to multiple
systems, in the future), it shouldn't break much in the future.

So, as things stand now, if I get access to a machine running Windows in
the next month, I'll attempt completing the port.

Otherwise, on October 20th I'll release GNU Smalltalk 3.1.

Thanks to Mike Bridgen, Olivier Blanc, Stephen Compall, Tony
Garnock-Jones, Brad Watson for the code they contributed to this
release, and to Thomas for promptly following the development with his
packages.

Paolo
