You need the cairo-devel package.

ahh... one of the advantages of running a source based linux:
never needing to install -devel packages :-)

so for an extremely clean build, do something like:

git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/smalltalk.git
autoreconf -vi
./configure --with-emacs --with-readline --with-gmp --with-tcl -- with-tk --enable-gtk
make all
sudo make install

Maybe Paolo can put this into the FAQ section?
Maybe it's already there?

I upgraded all installed packages from macports, and installed cairo- devel.
I did autoreconf -vi and so on..
I did "gst-package -t /Users/glpunzi/.st/ package.xml" inside gst- source-folder/packages/cairo I VIMed gst-VisualGST to point to /usr/local/bin/gst instead /opt/ VisualGST/bin/gst

Now, I get:
galilea:VisualGST glpunzi$ ./gst-VisualGST
galilea:VisualGST glpunzi$ Recompiling classes...
Recompiling classes...

Some advice?
