With the patch I committed you'll get:

checking whether -O2 -g -fplugin=foo produces any warnings... yes
configure: WARNING: clang -O2 -g -fplugin=foo produced warnings.  This
usually means
configure: WARNING: that -O2 -g -fplugin=foo is incorrect, and could
cause problems
configure: WARNING: in the rest of the configure script.
