Both. I have 2000+ messages, each a single file (I use exmh/nmh), in my
"junk" mailbox. I add them to the database with:
ifile -h -v 2 -i junk /home/ai2/jrennie/Mail/junk/*

Would it be very difficult to write a (e.g. perl) script that does the work
using the current ifile interface? Might also be helpful for you to
e-mail to the list a description of your set-up---where and how messages
are stored.
