Personally, I think it's good to let a Windows or MacOSX user get 
started with their first Linux distribution that is as easy as possible, 
especially when it comes to non-free hardware blobs, and perhaps larger 
community to help with peer support. Their second and subsequent 
distributions can become more free, with reduced hardware support, 
documentation, and peer support. :-)

Why not have 2 distros for installfests and disc giveways, 1 pragmatic 
(Ubuntu) and 1 idealistic (our choice of FSF-endorsed GNU+Linux distro)? 
Given the person skills, zeal, and target hardware, give them the more 
appropriate distro.

The September TA3M-Seattle meeting is tentatively scheduled to scheduled 
to have 2 speakers: Jason (on LibrePlanet-WA/FSF/SFD/etc), and Jerry 
Whiting (giving Linux-based Tor-centric privacy training). I believe 
Jerry plans on distributing Linux-based TAILs discs to the audience. SFD 
won't happen until the following week, but maybe we could also hand out 
some SFD discs after Jason's TA3M talk, in addition to SFD event?
