PDF backend has been orphaned for quite some time now, unfortunately.
Anyone willing to adopt it?

<http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/technotes.html> carries
everything you wanted to know about PS/PDF/Type technology but were
afraid to ask - including complete PDF-1.3 and PS3 specs.

Just few months after I had had my copy of PDF spec 1.2 printed and
bound they released 1.3. That new spec gained couple of extra pounds,
so I'd really like to buy it as a book, but it's not published :-(

It seems that you can still grab a copy of 1.2 (that Lout targets) from
<ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/devrelations/devtechnotes/pdffiles/PDFSPEC.PDF>

PDF have optional content compression as part of the format, so you
see the effect of "*.ps.gz", so to say.
