I'm offline now, so I can't double check this easily, but I suggest
you try issuing a head request.  I think you will find that the Modified
Date header for the SSI is the current date, or missing, and that the
real pages have a date representing the modification date of the
underlying file.

You may also find cache control headers.

Also, with HTTP 1.1, I think you will find that an if modified since request
will always return modified for the SSI pages.

It is possible to avoid this behaviour, but it means fully expanding the
SSI document in order to respond to these queries, and only works if there
is no gateway code.

Demon Internet Services bundle "free" web pages.  SSI is not permitted at
the base security level of common servers.  Demon do not permit it and only 
allow about three local, supplier provided, CGI scripts.
