Thanks to all who offered pointers and help. I finally figured out that rxvt
needs a library package called xpm which does X pixmap stuff. Why didn't they
just say so in the docs. Anyway, I downloaded a couple versions of xpm and
couldn't get it to compile. It was either making some screwy assumptions
about my system, or needed some other (non-mentioned) optional packages
installed. I finally found a product called across lite which came with a
solaris version of libXpm.so.7.3, and after just a little experimenting, I
was able to get rxvt to compile. It still bombed out on the install, but I
just installed it manually instead.
Now I need to embark on installing either slang or ncurses. I have downloaded
slang already so I guess I'll start with it. If I don't run out of disk space
today, and get the new drive installed tomorrow (Oh, I meant to send that
message just to Rob, but got such nice and quick answers from several others
that I don't regret hitting the whole list with it) I will soon compile lynx
for color. Then I can play with adding patches too and start helping to test
some of what is being done.
Oh, anyone out there admin on a Solaris box and want to offer to field a few
questions on getting my new drives online? (I was only a unix user, never a
sysadmin until I got this job and now I know more than anyone else at the
college about administering a Unix box. Scarry thing!)
Scott
PS I must remember to convert all this fun I'm having into FAQ entries!
