OK. Take a deep breath. Here goes.

1. You tried to execute a tar archive. That won't work.
2. Move lynx2-6.tar to a convenient directory, with at least 10 megs of
disk spare.

3. cd to that directory and run: tar xvf lynx2-6.tar
That will create a subdirectory called lynx2-6.

4. cd to lynx2-6 and read *all* the INSTALLATION file, any readme's etc.

5. Edit userdefs.h to suit your needs (read all the comments and help
stuff in there too), and then type: make|more

6. This will give you a list of supported systems. Pick the appropriate
one (e.g. linux-slang), then run e.g. make linux-slang

7. If it all compiles ok you will get "Welcome to Lynx" message.

8. If so, su to root, and run make install.
9. Edit /usr/local/lib/lynx.cfg to suit your needs (read all the good
stuff in there, too), and away you go.

OR: if you are using Linux Solaris or one of the more popular OS's, go to

http://www.crl.com/~subir/lynx/binaries.html

and pull down a binary from one of the sites listed there.
