Re: why news in lynx

Sigh.

One more time.

nntp: and news: are valid HTML tags. Either lynx has to be able to
pass a useful environment to a news reader when the user hits such
links, or it has to provide a useful environment (helper apps, internal
code, etc.).

Read only news: links with simple mini-inews posting support to the user's
NNTPSERVER makes sense.

However, access to adequately support nntp: links requires one to be
able to post to non-standard NNTPSERVERS when such access is available.
More and more folk are purchasing the Netscape and other commercial news
servers and providing private newsgroups (Netscape, Microsoft, I think
Sybase, etc.) as well as other folk provide Mailing List to Newsgroup
services (sites like genetics.upenn.edu). It does no good to tell the
user to user their default NNTPSERVER, since the default server doesn't
know anything about the newsgroups served up by these newsgroups.

I know that I myself am not looking for KILL file support, or even
NEWSRC support. While those are useful, they are not critical to
using such newsgroups. The only features _critical_ are supporting
reading and posting, with whatever features one considers minimally
required.

Sorry if I am a bit gruff here. I've explained this on usenet, in
email, and on various mailing lists. I've been flamed, ridiculed, and
ignored. It doesn't matter to me what folk do - lynx can be as limited
a program as one wishes. However, there are folk who are trying to use
lynx as a BBS system; in those cases, the users have less ability to
use alternate programs.
