I agree that the ideal code would analyze the previous line to see if it
ended with a newline.  However that's tricker than you might think - you
have to realize it's the last line or else check _EverY_ line to see if
it ends in a newline so that you know when you've hit the last line that
it ended in a newline.

Rather than waste that much time, I thought one extra character was worth
the savings.
