1. Lynx works on MSDOS/Unix/VMS.  However, tar and gzip are available on
all these.
2. Fote preferred zip, so since he was at that time the one being
the process owner (in management terms) , he got to choose the format
he distributed.

I was just talking to the folk over on the perl 5 process.  I was asking
how they managed to get their much larger distributions together each
time.  The person who is managing the current release stated two primary
factors that help get their releases out.  1. Larry Wall, the 'father'
of perl, continues to actively monitor the development mailing list
and contribute the final word as to whether a dramatic feature or change 
goes into perl, 2. Someone volunteers to be the primary coordinator
integrating things.  They are thinking of trying the CVS route as well,
but from the past 2 months of discussions I sense some hesitancy in moving
from something that works well to something that is untried.
