Wayne,

what about including gzip.exe in your DOS/Windows distribution, and
perhaps hack the path to it some way (it's surely not in /usr/bin :-).. 
Otherwise lynx would send Accept-Encoding: gzip but wont be capable of
receiving gzipped files.. Also, the gzip version could be the "gzip386",
which runs with the extender, because lynx is useless on a non-386
anyway..
