not to argue - but this is something that I've found doesn't work (on
SunOS, Solaris, HPUX).  For whatever reason, invoking 'sleep()' causes
the outgoing text to be held up (and, yes, I've tried using fflush() -
the 'sleep()' immediately after still holds it up).
