I didn't follow the whole thing (it generated about a bazillion
sub-threads), but I think it was set off by a NS Navigator beta with
text/html Usenet posting as the default, and diverged into ASCII/HTML
flamewars, other schemes for marking up news postings, the future of
Usenet generally, etc etc ... the whole thing struck me as proof that
Godwin's Law is not immutable.

Whether any of that was what the original writer (to this list) had in
mind, deponent knoweth not.
