As I suspected, which is why I asked instead of just suggesting that it be
done. :)  Par excellance!  I compiled both the HP and Linux versions I
keep locally (and share with others in the know) with slang and scrapped
the standard curses versions.  Now I can use it at work on the VT220 and
VT420 in mono and on any one of a number of terminal emulators in color
when it's available!

On the popup boxes, I didn't try it with standard HP curses, but it works
fine with slang. :)
