        Here's another plug for SmartList:

                Alan K. Stebbens (http://www.sgi.com/~aks(???))
has posted several recipe sets for SmartList --
one that I've read about allows the list manager
to construct a hybrid between open and moderated
lists. This works by having two accept lists --
one is the "accept" and the other is an "accept to
                moderator" (or "provisional") list.

With this it's possible for a list of moderators
to receive, review, and approve posts from new users.
Then any moderator can mail a control message moving
someone from the provisional list to the accept list.

This mostly eliminates spam (except from spammers who subscribe,
learn who is on the accept list and forge mail from an established
user). It's low load to the moderator(s) since they only have to
approve a couple of message per *new poster*.

You can also have reject lists (no mods needed -- that's a base
        feature).

SmartList is also really handy for "announce only" lists.
There you just unlink the dist list and the accept list (normally
hardlinked to one another) and create a short accept list of
"authorized announcers" People can continue to subscribe,
unsubscribe, request archives and digests and use the list as
normal. Indeed this was the feature that first converted me from
        Majordomo to SL.

I haven't actually played with AKS' stuff -- but I'm willing
to do that if there's enough interest.
