Unix: for a summary, buy the O'Reilly Nutshell book that best fits your 
version of Unix (there is a generic one, a SCO one and a Linux one, at
least).  For more detail, ask your computer services department to let
you see the original manuals, or print them out individually using the
man command.

On many systems "apropos xxx" will give you one line descriptions of
commands where the description contains xxx.
