Netscape to Begin Giving Away Browsers -- Kourosh Karimkany

PALO ALTO -- Netscape Communications Corp., said Thursday it will give away
its Navigator and Communicator browser products to consumers, online services
and personal computer makers.

IN AN EQUALLY IMPORTANT MOVE, Netscape also will make its programming code
-- which is normally jealously guarded by a software company --
available on the Internet, so that independent programmers can modify
and improve its browsers. The plan is to harness the technical expertise
of thousands to accelerate the browser's development and to encourage
customization by big corporate customers, Netscape executives said.
Smith said it is a "brilliant" move, because Netscape does not have the cash
and technical resources to compete in development with Microsoft:
"They are gaining an army of unpaid software developers".
