I am not quite sure that I understand exactly what you are trying to do.
If someone wants to archive the source on a floppy, zipsplit is
available for most platforms for the user to split it as he/she sees
fit.  Multiple small files may be advantageous for those having trouble
retrieving a large file because of poor network connectivity, but that
doesn't seem to be what you are saying. If archiving is the problem,
wouldn't it be simpler to just have the file split in two?

Even at the current size, the zip and tar.gz files will fit onto a
3.5-inch floppy, but not with standard formatting. On a MS-DOS system,
for instance, FDFORMAT can format a disk with large enough capacity to
hold the file.
