If that 386 is running some version of UNIX, check out 
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~jeffwong/lynxstuff/SSL

If not, you could possibly find and setup a proxy server to handle HTTPS
URLs. I'm sure, however, that this is a bit costly and difficult in
Windows.
