there has been extensive discussion of this problem on lynx-dev:
look in the Archive at www.flora.org/lynx-dev/ .
it may have been fixed to some extent in more recent versions:
try getting 2-8 from www.slcc.edu/lynx/release/
or the latest development version from sol.slcc.edu/lynx/current/
(there have been hardware problems at those URLs recently,
but i believe they have been cured by now).
