Currently, no one has stepped forward to do either 2 or 3, which means
that, by default, we get option 1.  However, if you, or anyone else on
the mailing list, feels passionate about this, then they should feel
encouraged to take on one of the two approaches.  I must warn the mailing
list that in general, new releases removing features tends to result in
folk not using the new release ...
