In SVr4 curses (ncurses) that's called a "pad".  There's an example in
the ncurses test program (also named 'ncurses').  That would have to be
ifdef'd to accommodate the older versions of curses (I see that pdcurses
supports this, but doubt that VAX curses did) as well as slang (doubtless
it supports something analogous, but with a different calling interface.
