I've done some work since 2.8 to make the socks version build automatically.
As far as I know, the current prerelease of Lynx 2.8.1 (currently pre.6)
builds properly against SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 - but I've not had time to work out
how to test it (results from a couple of people who were trying to use that
are inconclusive).
