so like Laura's been telling us:
if shaking it doesn't work, bang it on the table ...

i commented out the section marked  #if HAVE_LSTAT ... #endif
& the problem is solved!

of course, i don't know whether i may have created problems elsewhere,
but i will use the new version & report accordingly.

is this an adequate bug-fix PRO TEM for 2-8-1 ?
and my other questions, especially why others haven't encountered this.
