That would have been valid in the past when domain naming wasn't
commercialised and names were allocated by experienced administrators,
but there is now a premium on short names and system administrators
don't think of the consequences (mail transport agents and DNS servers
have had to have their domain guessing weakened, e.g. try exact match
first and use a fixed list of local domains rather than trying 2, 3,..
components from the local name, because of problems caused by this).

Personally I don't believe I have ever benefited from domain guessing,
and I always enter full URLs, including the http:.  In fact, one 
annoying thing is I can no longer do start menu | run | "ftp" in NT 4,
because it tries to open IE4 on the URL ftp://ftp.mydomain.co.uk/,
rather than run the command line ftp client.
