I have two "enter" keys on my keyboard.  They will generate different codes.
Are you talking about the one at the far right of the keyboard, in the numeric
keypad, or the one in the middle section?

Curses is supposed to return a KEY_ENTER if the string matches the 'kent'
string - no matter what it is set to (in this case a '\r').  Likewise,
there are special definitions for backspace and delete.

then change your terminfo description.
