Well, it must have been something else -- the select() problem that I
mentioned was introduced some time in the last few months.  You said you
were upgrading from Lynx 2.4.2, which is unspeakably ancient.  It could
have been dying for any number of reasons (which would not be
interesting to research at this point...)

Moving to a reasonably current Lynx is always a good idea.  ;-}
