Cool, I had given up FAR FAR too easily.  I simply didn't have /usr/ccs/bin
in my path, so it literally wasn't finding "ar".  (Though "file not found"
instead of a permissions error would've clued me in on that..)

I'll figure out how to put patches on now, and see if this fixes my crashing
