... and Solaris's vi does something incredibly stupid. It shows,
for example, the NBSP character (=160) as "\040". I can only conjecture
its logic is, "I see this is a non-ASCII character, so I must format
it as an escape sequence -- but wait -- first I must clear the parity
bit before formatting it!"
