It might me nice, but special casing individual variations like the above,
will quickly lead to some really unweildly code, IMO.

And then there's the problem of dealing with non-default bindings.  What
if the user has rebound "?" to some other function in your example.  Etc.

I think it might help, if you thought less of the ^V key as a "mode entry
key", and more of it like an escape-to-normal-commands key, which is what
it really is (when in a TEXTAREA).

Context-sensitive commands are a nice idea in general, but not a trivial
thing to retrofit to the existing code, from what I've seen.  Too bad ...
