A problem you will find with contributed RPMs is that the contributors want
to be first to market (not that they make money from it) so they tend to 
create RPMs of all the development releases.  They often then fail to make
it perfectly clear that the RPM doesn't represent a stable version.  I've
observed this particular on the squid list where a version which should 
never be used in production, except as a last resort by experts, was 
released by someone as an RPM, and then produced off topic support questions
on a list which was restricted to released versions.

(Microsoft probably has something to blame for blurring the distinction between
a test version and an early release.)

Building from source really is the best way and it is not difficult.  It
is not like you have to pay for the development tools.
