yes, that makes sense of the phenomenon: presumably the inquiry is directed
to different DNS servers depending on the numbers involved:
i haven't checked how FT's numbers may differ from eg New Scientist's,
but if one is in London & the other in Manchester (say),
one could be down for some reason, while the other responds promptly.
