A couple datapoints, FYI ...

They *are* available on FreeBSD (2.2.8-STABLE), but are NOT on either
of the linux's that I have access to:

 Red Hat Linux release 4.0 (Colgate) Kernel 2.0.18 on an i586

and

 GNU/Linux version 2.2.5-15smp

Don't seem to be very portable, given linux popularity.
