I responded earlier to a subtler aspect. But what you're looking for:
All autoconf scripts use the $CFLAGS value to override the -g -O options
that they infer for the compiler. I'd set $CPPFLAGS if I wanted to
customize the -I and -D options (but all of the settings for that in Lynx
that I use are part of the configure script).
