The question isn't completely clear. It seems as if a http_proxy is
being used, but it isn't clear whether the error message is from lynx
or from the proxy. It seems most likely that the proxy address is
incorrect, with the most common error being absence of the terminal
"/".

I would verify that there is an environment variable
"http_proxy", set to the IP address of the proxy, optonally
including a port, and including the terminal slash, e.g.,
"http_proxy=http://123.456.78.9:5196/";, or that http_proxy is set in
lynx.cfg.

The earlier post about login and passwd is confusing, and makes me
wonder if I have completely misinterpreted the question.
