Sorry but I was totally confused.

Yes, you are right.  I was talking about Slang with Japanized 
patch and not with SLANG_HAS_KANJI_SUPPORT.

As I am a Debian user and Debian provides us slang1-ja package
(Slang with Japanized patch!) so I simply considered it as Slang 
with Japanese support and was confused.  

And, yes, the problem was with Slang with Japanized patch.
(Sorry but I do not remember the precise version of Slang, 
however I guess perhaps 1.2.1 or 1.2.2)
