Yes, and I think reverse-search patch will be no bigger than 7 Kb if such
approach is used (i.e. it will be easy to code it).
The only problem I remember is chosing the default key for reverse search
command.

Since (if we try to be nice) the support for unicode is necessary, I think
no ifdefs will be required - we'll have to bundle (or strictly require to
be installed) one of the rx libs that support unicode (most probably Spencer's)
and use only it. So, I think only one define EXP_SUPPORT_RX or similar will be
added.
