lynx-dev no keyboard response after going to shell

Pressed "!" to escape to the shell, but once I got there nothing was
echoed on the command line.  Only ^C seemed to do anything, but even
that just did a carriage return.  Fortunately was running in "screen,"
so could kill the process.  This is on Solaris2.6 with csh shell.
Lynx is 2.8.4dev.8, using slang.

There are some differences in the display from 2.8.2dev.22:

1) The status line is kept on the screen in 2.8.4dev.8, but not
   2.8.2dev.22.
2) The message that have escaped to the shell and how to get back,
   AND the prompt, are in COLOR:2: (I think.) as defined in lynx.cfg
   in 2.8.4dev.8, but in 2.8.2dev.22 these were the color of the
   shell (on my system, white letters on black).
