the (VMS) POSIX subsystem may/may not be installed, and afaik was dropped from
support a few years ago.  It does have 'remove()', which returns a nonzero
on error (now that you mention it, 'unlink()' is not supported everywhere - 
I recall running into that on one of my ports, where 'remove()' was.

I saw your earlier report, looked and decided to put it off past 2.8.4 since
fixing it would involve rewriting a chunk of configure-script.  (No one noticed
that for the past 3+ years btw).
