Oh sorry, I was just referring to the encap package management
system that I am using in addition to my distro's regular
package system for packages I want to compile on my own. One of
its advantages is that it makes it easy to keep different
versions of the same program lying around on the disk which is
handy in an instance like this.

If you know GNU stow it built around the same idea.
