What is the terminfo you are using?  Your problem sounds like one where
ncurses is turning off colors near the end of the line, perhaps from
a clearing operation which as a side-effect resets the color.

(A picture would help see this, but I'm assuming you are running in
a console window -- I don't know how you would capture that).

OS/2 console window doesn't implement default-colors, iirc.
