I'm not sure of the language here.  Does "external-viewer mechanism"
refer to (or include) viewers defined in the .mailcap file?  I've
long wished that lynx spawning a viewer would set all the environment
variables set by metamail spawning the same viewer (or merely spawn
metamail and let it do the dirty work).  This would require that
lynx pass metamail on stdin the full HTTP reply: headers plus body.
I know; I'll be invited to write the code.  When I have time ...
