true (occasionally I see a nice way to combine some of them into macros, and
then reduce the number of ifdef's).  The same for repeated chunks of code. 

lynx has about 4 times as many ifdef's per line of code as vile
(vi-like-emacs), but runs on the same set of platforms.  So I think 
some improvement is likely.
