I'm not sure of what is meant by "entity",

I just don't see why I have to trade off decoding entities for decoding gzip.
If Lynx can do both, and they are not mutually exclusive, then why?

a recognizable character on your screen, then you'll have to set
your display character set accordingly.  The only way you'll be able
to translate "every" character is if you set it to UTF-8.  Again,

I'm rather uncertain, but "Transparent" might work as you expect if
your locale is set "correctly" for the page you're viewing and your
terminal emulation, or whatever, supports it.

What is that? A Unix thing? Is that some LC_something or other?
I'm not experienced in that sort of thing...
