You gave the answer yourself:

So it's not lynx broken but the servers.

But ... you don't know what viewer to call because you don't know
the content-type: not all viewers know all types.
As a "catch-all" solution you could make your own handler which
accepts all types, saves in tmp-file, "file tmp-file" and then act
based on the result. Ugly, but works.
