Maybe, usually, a hypen is directly connected to a letter
and never(?) connected to a space, so one can understand easily

O, no. It is quite correct practice to write, say
"four- or five-sided polygons". To write, as our local paper all too
often does, "four or five-sided polygons" is to say "four polygons or
five-sided polygons". Actually, more than a few of Jay Leno s funny
headlines exist because of American hyphen-misuse.
